In a previous message sent to you in August, we had communicated the recent changes in the local and global recycling market. The main contributing factor for these changes is the strict regulations China has placed on imported recyclable materials. In response to this changing environment, we have decided that residents and commercial customers are no longer required to recycle glass.
Recycled glass can be a benefit, however the cost of transporting and processing recycled glass makes used glass nearly worthless. Glass manufacturers also prefer to utilize the process of creating glass out of sand rather than recycled glass to ensure quality standards. This is the preferred method due to the high levels of contamination in recyclable materials.
We understand this is a large change to normal recycling practices. The decision to no longer require glass recycling does not mean we will not be accepting glass. It is simply to help cut down on expensive processes that endanger our laborers and damage our trucks. Waste Management made a similar decision this time last year, click here to learn more.
